THORNYCROFT 55 ft CMB:s MTB 4-7
The Syöksy class motor torpedo boats was a series of four British Thornycroft type MTB:s. The first two vessels were constructed in 1928 by the Thornycroft & Co shipyard in UK. The two later ones were made in Finland 1929 under the license of Thornycroft. All these boats saw service the couple of first years in WWII.
The Thornycroft type released its torpedoes by dropping them from rails in the aft. The ship then had to steer away from the torpedoes path. It had so called one stepped hull with quite deep v-shape. That gave it little better seaworthiness than its Italian rival MAS-boat had with two steps and low v-shape.
During the war the vessels received individual identification symbols on their superstructures (which was before the war just canvas with a wooden frame) :
MTB4 Syöksy the ace of diamonds
MTB5 Nuoli ace of hearts
MTB6 Vinha the ace of clubs
MTB7 Raju the ace of spades
Syöksy and Vinha with some other light craft participated in the attack on the harbour of Lavansaari on November 1942. MTB4 managed to torpedo and sink the Soviet 1.800t gunboat. Also the other ones were succesful again targets like transportation ships, barges and also small mine warfare. Boats suffered problems with aging, lack of spares and most badly the weak gunnery - just one small 0.3cal mg.
Raju was sunk after a collision with an underwater obstacle in the summer 1943. It and Vinha became earlier that year light minelayers and were equipped with 20 mm cannon instead of the former "7,62 mm Mickey Mouse gun" As the crew called it. Later Syöksy and Vinha saw action as the patrol boats in the lake Ladoga as same year number 5 was taken off the duty.
